South African mobile technology company Mission Mobile announced that it will receive up to R500 million in funding from investment holding company DN Invest (DNI).
The investment will enable the startup to expand its model, helping mobile network operators (MNOs) serve a broader customer base while giving more people access to smartphones and cost-effective connectivity.
Mission Mobile was created to help network operators build more consistent customer engagement and help customers get more from their mobile spend. Though operators invest heavily to attract customers, many struggle to build longer-term engagement and realise the full value of those relationships.
At the same time, many South Africans battle to access affordable smartphone and connectivity offers.
“With more than 80% of South Africa’s mobile connections still on prepaid, a traditional contract remains out of reach for many,” said Tim Strike, Co-founder and CEO of Mission Mobile.
“Customers are often spread across multiple SIMs, with little commitment to any one network.
“That erodes the value of customer relationships for local network providers. It also lessens the purchasing power of their customers and compromises their ability to stay connected.”
A homegrown answer to a long-standing challenge
Mission Mobile’s solution began with Beam, its proprietary technology platform. Beam interprets how people actually earn and spend, rather than relying only on conventional financial assessments. This helps the company identify customers for whom a smartphone offer would be a good fit, but who might otherwise be overlooked by traditional providers.
Mission Mobile has since turned that capability into a model offered to customers through MNO retail outlets. Its approach is grounded in a deep understanding of both the local market and the challenge operators face in serving a wider range of customers.
“Our technology helps us connect customers with smartphone offers that suit their needs and give them more value from their mobile spend,” commented Tim Strike.
“This enables network providers to serve people who might previously have been out of reach, while helping customers stay connected and active on the same SIM.
“Ultimately, this creates more predictable engagement, stronger loyalty and greater long-term value for networks and their customers.”
A dual-sided value model
These dual benefits are made possible by Mission Mobile’s distinctive model, which is accessible to customers through MNO retail outlets.
The model caters for customers across both postpaid and prepaid categories. In postpaid, it enables smartphone access for people who might otherwise be overlooked, connecting them with a value-led offer suited to their needs. In prepaid, it combines smartphone access with data and connectivity benefits through its DataBack Device proposition, helping customers stay online.
Through its relationship with network operators, Mission Mobile can access preferential rates on popular data bundles and pass those savings on. This means customers often pay meaningfully less for the same data than they would on the open market. Better value and added connectivity benefits give customers more reason to stay engaged, supporting stronger loyalty and more predictable long-term value for MNOs.
Because Mission Mobile owns and runs the model end to end, it can also tailor propositions for individual network providers. These in-house capabilities span customer onboarding and device delivery, payments, data fulfilment and customer service.
Built in South Africa for the local market
Mission Mobile was founded in 2023 by Johannesburg-born brothers Tim and Adam Strike.
Tim leads the commercial strategy, drawing on his experience from co-founding South African firms E Centive and Ignite.
Adam, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, leads its technology development.
He studied mathematics and computer science at the University of Pennsylvania and developed software through the student-run Penn Labs team. Together, they combine local market insight with the engineering capability to build solutions tailored to South African realities.
DNI backing to fuel the next phase of growth
Looking ahead, Mission Mobile’s priority is to accelerate growth.
The funding from DNI, drawn from its own resources and ring-fenced debt facilities, will extend the startup’s customer reach and support the development of further propositions for network providers.
For DNI, the investment is about more than capital.
The company aims to broaden connectivity, drive financial inclusion and enable more people to participate fully in the digital economy. It does this by backing founders and businesses developing practical ways to expand access.
“DNI invests in the people behind the businesses,” said Mick Silke, CEO of FinCo at DNI. “Tim, Adam and their team recognised an opportunity to help mobile network operators serve millions more people and built the technology to make that possible.
The commercial opportunity is considerable, but so is the potential impact on people’s lives—greater value from their hard-earned money and the ability to stay connected. Businesses that can achieve both are rare, and they are exactly the ones we look to support.”
“We’ve only just begun to show what’s possible when networks can bring their full value to far more people,” said Tim Strike. “The device-financing market has focused heavily on placing smartphones in people’s hands, but that’s only the beginning of digital access. Real progress means helping people stay connected for the long term. With DNI behind us and the networks alongside us, that is exactly what we intend to do for many more South Africans.”
