Kumba Iron Ore (SIOC) has taken a decisive step toward carbon neutrality, signing an Energy Offtake Agreement (EOA) for the Sishen Solar Photovoltaic (PV) plant.
The project will supply 63MW of renewable electricity directly to the Sishen mine, with first power expected to flow in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The initiative underscores Kumba’s commitment to the “Healthy Environment” strategic pillar and positions the company to significantly reduce its environmental footprint.
At steady state, the new solar facility is expected to displace approximately 35% of Sishen’s current scope 2 carbon emissions, a crucial milestone in the company’s journey toward net-zero operations.
Innovative Engineering and Land Repurposing
The Sishen Solar PV project is unique in its approach to engineering and land use.
The facility is being developed atop the existing G80 Waste Rock Dump within the Sishen mine boundary, effectively repurposing previously disturbed mining land. This transformation requires innovative geotechnical solutions to convert the site into a productive energy-generating asset that delivers both economic and environmental value.
The facility is engineered to maximize financial efficiency, featuring an installed capacity of 72.5 Megawatt-peak (MWp) DC, delivering 63MW Alternating Current (AC). This addition will boost Kumba’s total renewable energy penetration to approximately 45%, building on the 11MW of wheeled renewable energy already supplied to the Kolomela mine via Envusa’s Koruson 2 cluster.
A Milestone for Envusa Energy
This agreement represents the first embedded renewable energy project to reach the offtake stage under the broader Envusa Energy programme.
It follows the successful launch of the Koruson 2 cluster, which includes the MooiPlaats Solar PV (240MW), Umsobomvu Wind (140MW), and Hartebeesthoek Wind (140MW) projects spanning the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces.
Community Empowerment and the SIOC CDT
Beyond environmental benefits, the project is designed to foster inclusive growth. A defining feature of the energy transition is the integration of long-term community benefits through the Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust (SIOC CDT). The Trust will hold a 10% interest in the Sishen Solar PV project, ensuring host communities share in the dividend flows from these long-life energy assets.
These funds will be reinvested into local job creation, education, healthcare, infrastructure, skills development, and sustainable livelihoods.
Executive Commentary
Commenting on the development, Kumba’s Chief Executive Officer, Mpumi Zikalala, emphasized the strategic importance of the project:
“The Sishen solar PV project is designed to deliver reliable, cost-competitive renewable energy and, together with Kolomela, which has been receiving 11MW in wheeled renewable energy since March 2026, strengthens the pathway to a lower-carbon future. The Project advances our ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030 and supports Anglo American’s 2030 climate target.”
Forward-Looking Commitment
The agreement aligns with Kumba’s broader climate strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 28% by 2030 (off a 2020 re-baseline). It also supports Anglo American’s global climate targets, demonstrating a unified effort to transition toward sustainable mining practices.
