The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) wants to ensure the sustainable growth of South Africa’s economy by accelerating the digital modernisation of the railway.

This was outlined at its elections manifesto for the 2019 general elections launched yesterday at the Giant Stadium in Soshanguve.

The EFF sees railway network as central to the country’s economic growth.

The railway networks are becoming connected or turned into digital railways as global operators embark on a mission to upgrade old engineering with digital technology.

The objective is to bring the industry into the 21st century dominated by sensors and Internet of Things (IoT), which create higher levels of railway operation efficiencies.

The manifesto document states that it will complete the digitisation of South Africa’s railway network by 2023, creating 2 500 jobs.

Accelerate Growth Of Drones

Digital railways will help the country to reduce the operating cost of the railway whilst further improving safety, and make optimal use of existing assets rather than building new ones.

Furthermore, the EFF government promises to employ 350 software developers, 175 of whom will be women, by 2022 to provide AI-driven traffic solutions for South African cities and rail networks.

The party’s manifesto also states that it will establish a research and development centre by 2024, which will be accountable to the Departments of Defence and Transport and will focus on drone development, creating 7 500 jobs, 4 000 of which will be reserved for women.
