On World EV Day, a recent survey of over 6,700 South African car owners highlights a significant shift in perception, with growing interest in Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and EVs. For many diesel owners, Volvo’s electrified lineup is proving to be the perfect bridge, offering the performance and flexibility they expect, but with greater efficiency and lower running costs.
The data shows that 60% of diesel owners are likely to consider a hybrid within the next 3-5 years, viewing them as delivering the “best of both worlds.”
Hybrids Hit the Sweet Spot for Performance
Volvo PHEVs are designed to meet this demand, combining responsive power with impressive efficiency. The XC60 Recharge is a prime example, delivering a staggering 340 kW and 709 N.m of torque, yet achieving a combined fuel consumption of just 1.6 L/100 km.
This power comes from a sophisticated powertrain combining a petrol engine and an electric motor powered by a 19 kWh battery. This allows for up to 81 km of pure electric driving, significantly reducing fuel costs for daily commutes without sacrificing the power associated with high-performance SUVs.
“Diesel drivers are discerning. They want flexibility, power, and cost efficiency. That’s exactly what hybrids deliver, without the compromises,” commented Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa.
EVs Offer a Glimpse of the Future
For those ready to go fully electric, the future is bright. More than a third (38%) of diesel owners are currently considering an EV. The Volvo EX90 offers a range of over 600 km, making long-distance travel practical. The upcoming ES90 sedan will push that further, with a planned range of up to 700 km, capable of adding 300 km of range in just 10 minutes at a 350 kW fast-charger.
Volvo supports this transition with practical ownership solutions, including assistance with home wallbox charger installations and access to a growing public network.
Why an Electrified Volvo Makes the Switch Easy
With clear total cost-of-ownership benefits and a proven record of reliability, moving from diesel to a Volvo PHEV or EV is a straightforward and compelling choice.
“With more than half of diesel owners surveyed planning to buy a car within the next year, plug-in hybrids offer a compelling, practical upgrade,” concluded Locke. “And for those ready to explore fully electric driving, Volvo’s award-winning lineup of EVs—which includes the recently introduced EX30 Cross Country—shows just how seamless and rewarding the transition can be.”
