Eskom and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) have reached a settlement in a High Court case initiated by Eskom in 2021. The case sought to nullify a cost reduction contract known as the “Capital Scrubbing engagement” and recover payments made to PwC and Nkonki.
This engagement was examined by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, commonly referred to as the Zondo Commission.
As part of the settlement, the disputed contract has been set aside, and PwC will pay Eskom R43 million in a full and final settlement of Eskom’s claim.
This resolution marks a crucial step in Eskom’s ongoing efforts to enhance governance and accountability.
“Management’s commitment in dealing with cases arising from the findings of the Zondo Commission has been instrumental in achieving this outcome, and it underscores our dedication to restoring integrity within Eskom,” said Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane.
Eskom remains focused on implementing generation recovery strategies, strengthening governance, and combating crime and corruption. The organisation is committed to ensuring energy security, fostering economic growth, and driving long-term sustainability for the benefit of South Africa and the broader sub-Saharan region.
Eskom’s relentless execution of the Generation Recovery Plan has achieved a monumental milestone: 303 consecutive days without loadshedding since 26 March 2024. This Sunday, 26 January, marks 10 full months of uninterrupted power supply, a testament to the utility’s progress in its turnaround strategy.
In addition to this remarkable achievement, Eskom has saved R16.40 billion in diesel costs year-to-date, a staggering 62.4% reduction compared to the R26.27 billion spent during the same period last year. These savings underscore Eskom’s commitment to financial prudence and operational efficiency.
Summer outlook remains positive
Last August, Eskom forecasted a loadshedding-free summer from 1 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, citing structural improvements in generation capacity. This outlook remains unchanged, with the utility confidently maintaining its prediction of a stable power supply throughout the season.
