Netflix today launched a new feature called “Downloads For You”, which will automatically download recommended shows or movies to your mobile device based on your tastes. The feature is being rolled out globally starting today and soon will start testing on iOS.
Three years ago, Netflix introduced Smart Downloads so you can find the next episode of your favourite show – even when you’re on the go.
Now, we want to make discovering your next new favourite series or film quick and easy whether you’re connected or not, said Patrick Flemming, Netflix’s director of product innovation.
“Today, we’re launching Downloads For You, a new feature that automatically downloads recommended shows or movies to your mobile device based on your tastes. Whether you’re a comedy fan stuck on a long car ride or a rom-com lover without internet, we do the work so there is always something new waiting to entertain and delight you,” said Flemming.
He said the streaming giant is always looking for ways to improve the mobile experience.
“We’re excited to make it even easier for members to discover and enjoy new series and films.”
You can also cast the downloaded content to a nearby TV, where it will stream directly from your phone.
How to turn on Downloads For You

- Go to the Downloads tab on your mobile device and toggle on Downloads For You.
- Choose the amount of content you want downloaded to your device (1GB, 3GB, or 5GB) and click Turn On. The more space you allow, the more recommendations Netflix will download for you.

Flemming said the feature is available today on Android globally and “we’ll be testing soon on iOS.
“We’re always looking for ways to improve the mobile experience, and we’re excited to make it even easier for members to discover and enjoy new series and films.”
