Mobile phone giant MTN said the start date for the new CEO Rob Shuter has been brought forward by three months to 13 March. By Staff Writer
Shuter, a South African-born executive who leads Vodafone’s European cluster as CEO, was expected start by 1 July 2017.
“Following the announcement of senior management changes made on 20 June 2016 we are pleased to announce that the starting date for new Group President and CEO Rob Shuter has been brought forward. Rob will be joining us on 13 March 2017.,” said Phuthuma Nhlenko, MTN’s executive chairman.
With the completion of his two key mandates of settling the Nigerian regulatory fine and appointing a new Group president and CEO, Nhleko will revert to his role as non-executive chairman as soon as Rob assumes his position.
“In the interim, whilst I will continue as executive chairman to provide oversight, I will delegate more operational responsibilities to Gunter Engling, acting CFO and Stephen Van Coller, VP M&A and Strategy.,” said Nhleko.
“I will also ensure that all outstanding senior management appointments are completed and the new senior management team is fully settled in before year end.”
Shuter has extensive experience in telecoms and banking having held senior management roles at Vodacom Group, Standard Bank and Nedbank prior to joining Vodafone Group.
The appointment of Shuter by MTN as CEO was viewed by the Black Management Forum (BMF as a serious blow to transformation.
The BMF said this appointment by MTN contributes to the steady decline in the number of black South Africans at the leadership helm in companies.
