Nedbank Group has announced a major leadership change in its technology division, appointing Nikos Angelopoulos as its new Group Chief Information Officer (CIO).
The appointment, effective 1 September 2026, signals a significant shift for South Africa’s “green bank” as it looks to double down on digital innovation.
Angelopoulos joins the financial services giant from MTN Group, where he served as Group CIO since 2018. During his tenure at the telecommunications leader, he was responsible for overseeing information technology strategy, investments, and governance across 16 markets, serving a combined customer base of more than 300 million people.
A Global Technologist with Deep Transformation Experience
The incoming CIO is no stranger to large-scale digital overhauls.
With over 30 years of experience spanning Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, Angelopoulos brings a wealth of knowledge in cloud computing, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI) transformation.
Prior to his leadership role at MTN, Nikos held senior executive positions at some of the world’s most prominent tech and telecom firms. He previously served at du (the UAE telecom operator), Vodafone, and global consultancy giant Accenture, giving him a unique perspective on both corporate strategy and operational delivery.
Academic Pedigree and Strategic Vision
Angelopoulos possesses a robust academic background to complement his executive experience. He holds an Executive MBA from the London Business School, an MSc in Digital Communications and Signal Processing from Imperial College London, and a BSc in Physics from the University of Athens.
The appointment has received the full endorsement of Nedbank’s leadership. Jason Quinn, Chief Executive, alongside the Group Exco and the Nedbank Board, have extended a warm welcome to the new CIO. They expressed confidence that his international experience and proven track record in digital transformation will be invaluable as Nedbank continues to evolve its technology landscape to meet the needs of modern customers.
