The FNB App Academy, a transformative nine-week online tech programme, kicks off on 22 April 2025, offering young South Africans free access to coding skills, industry mentorship, and career-building opportunities. With classes held twice a week, the academy equips participants with hands-on experience to thrive in the digital economy.

Bridging the skills pap in South Africa

In a country where youth unemployment remains a critical challenge, the FNB App Academy provides a lifeline by delivering cutting-edge digital training at no cost. Since its launch, the initiative has empowered over 17,000 young people across South Africa and the continent, helping them secure jobs or start their own tech ventures.

Simphiwe Radebe, a graduate of the programme, is proof of its impact. With only a matric certificate, he entered the academy with no prior coding experience. Today, he works as a full-stack developer at a leading financial institution.

“I joined the App Academy while doing my grade 11, I had no formal experience in software development,” says Radebe.

“The academy not only gave me the technical skills but also the confidence and network to break into the industry. Today, I’m working as a full stack developer for a leading corporate, and I’m grateful for the opportunities this programme has given me.”

A pathway to employment and entrepreneurship

The academy doesn’t just teach coding, it fosters job creation and entrepreneurship.

Graduates leave with a nationally recognised qualification, making them competitive in the job market.

Others leverage their skills to launch startups, contributing to South Africa’s growing digital economy.

Mpho Ntusi, a 2025 applicant from the Eastern Cape, sees the programme as a chance to uplift her community.

“I am hoping to gain valuable insights and skills from the programme. I am very ready and look forward to learning from the best. I hope that the knowledge I gain will lead to more employment opportunities and allow me to continue contributing to the lives of those I serve,” she says.

The FNB App Academy is a game-changer for South Africa’s youth. Free, high-quality coding education with real job prospects? That’s a rare opportunity. With 17K+ graduates and counting, it’s clear this program is making a real impact. But here’s the question: Why aren’t more companies investing in similar initiatives? The demand for digital skills is huge—what’s stopping other industries from stepping up? 🚀 #FutureOfWork #TechForGood
