Eskom’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan has successfully kept loadshedding suspended for over six months, achieving 184 consecutive days of uninterrupted power supply since 26 March 2024. Operational efficiency remains aligned with summer expectations, with unplanned outages averaging 11 911MW over the past week, down from 14 800MW during the same period last year.
Increased Planned Maintenance and Reduced Unplanned Outages
From 01 September to 26 September 2024, planned maintenance averaged 6 356MW, compared to 5 294MW last year, to enhance generation fleet reliability. Unplanned outages have also decreased significantly, averaging 11 524MW, compared to 15 934MW during the same period last year.
Strategic Use of OCGT Plants Amid Higher Demand
The Open Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) plants have been extensively used recently due to delays in restoring 2 685MW of capacity and unexpected high demand due to cold weather. Despite this, diesel costs from 01 April to 26 September 2024 amounted to R5.78 billion, down significantly from R17.11 billion during the same period last year.
Improved Energy Availability Factor and Performance of Key Stations
Eskom’s Energy Availability Factor (EAF) averaged 59% over the past week and 63% year-to-date, with top-performing stations like Kusile, Majuba, and Camden maintaining EAFs above 70%. Ongoing improvements in generation fleet performance are attributed to the recovery plan, accelerated maintenance, collaboration with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and the dedication of power station managers and their teams.
Key Performance Indicators
- Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF) has improved to 25.4% year-to-date (down from 34.3% last year).
- EAF has increased to 63.3% year-to-date, up from 55.2% last year.
- OCGT Diesel Expenditure has decreased by 66% year-on-year, with a load factor of 5.88% compared to last year’s 19.20%.
Public Appeal Against Illegal Connections
While loadshedding remains suspended, Eskom urges the public to avoid illegal connections and report any unauthorized activities that could compromise network safety and reliability.
Eskom will provide an update on 04 October 2024 or communicate any significant changes as they arise.
