South Africa has deployed soldiers to help the police restore order in towns and cities affected by violent protests and brazen looting.

“The South African Defence Forced (SANDF) has commenced with pre-deployment processes and procedure,” said a statement released Monday attributed to Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi.

The statement said the deployment was in line with a request for assistance received from the national joint operations intelligence structure.

The statement said the SANDF has agreed to assist law enforcement agencies in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces to quell the unrest that has gripped both provinces in the last few days.

Soldiers were seen arriving in Pietermaritzburg, where brazen looting was taking place.

The army will assist the police to carry out their duties.
