At a time when gaming companies are battling for the attention of users following the release of two major consoles, the war between PlayStation and Xbox has likely never been more cutthroat. The decades-old battle has been in motion since Xbox first launched in late 2001 against their already well-established 6-year-old rival – however, PlayStation has levelled up its online presence and managed to leave Xbox in the dust.

To gain some perspective on how Sony’s PlayStation consoles compare to that of both Microsoft’s Xbox range and Nintendo, Compare the Market created a detailed infographic that explores the market share of players that use their console to access the internet across 21 countries.

PlayStation was the winner, with more players accessing the internet with the Sony console by a considerable margin, holding 63.39% of the market as of mid-2020. In comparison, Xbox only represented 36.6% of gamers who used their console to access the internet. These statistics were taken prior to the launch of the new consoles in early November.

It’s an even stronger win when historical figures are brought into the mix. The last three years’ results were also analysed and PlayStation continuously appeared in the first place. The strongest lead was in 2018 when the brand had a 71% share against Xbox’s 25.29%.

The division between PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo internet access in each country is outlined in the graphic below.
