In 2021, the new 223-series Mercedes-Maybach S-Class will be delivered to the first customers – exactly 100 years after the first Maybach automobile presented in 1921. This Model W 3 was already dedicated to maximum comfort and luxury. On the basis of a historically evolved understanding of luxury and superlative quality, Mercedes-Maybach has always redefined the luxury of the future.
The focus on the rear area
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is particularly suitable for chauffeured driving. The 18 cm longer wheelbase compared to the long variant of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class entirely benefits the rear.
The focus on the rear area. This is underlined by even more refined appointments. The massage function of the calfrests on the Executive seats is a new feature. The First-Class Rear has been extensively upgraded. The neck/shoulder heating in the rear is another comfort feature.
On request, the car can be equipped with electrically operated comfort rear doors. With this feature, the wide rear doors can be conveniently opened and closed with little force even on a gradient.
The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX)
The second generation of learn-capable MBUX introduced in 2018 has its debut in the new S-Class.
The unique feature of MBUX is its networking with a wide range of vehicle systems and sensor data. Brilliant displays on up to five large screens, in part with OLED technology, make the control of vehicle and comfort functions even easier. On request, the car can also be equipped with MBUX Interior Assist in the rear.
The new Merc is also able to recognise movements and gestures by the rear occupants with the help of cameras in the roof liner. An overview of the additional functions of MBUX Interior Assist.
MBUX Interior Assist already supports the rear occupants when they enter the vehicle. Lowered head restraints are extended. The optional comfort doors can be closed by a corresponding gesture, and stopped by extending an arm. To make seat belt fastening easier on the outer rear seats, the belt extender emerges as soon as a corresponding hand movement is recognised as an intention to reach for the belt.
MBUX Interior Assist enables rear passengers to open and close the roller sunblind with hand gestures below the glass roof.
MBUX Interior Assist also enhances comfort and safety in the rear when the journey ends. The exit warning function of the driving assistance systems has been extended: If a rear passenger moves a hand towards the door handle, MBUX Interior Assist recognises the intention to open the door. If a vehicle is approaching from the rear, this function can warn the occupants. When the rear passengers have left the vehicle, extended calfrests are automatically retracted to facilitate reentry. When the front passenger door is opened, the front passenger seat is moved back to its normal position if previously moved well forward, so that the front passenger can enter easily.
The new DRIVE PILOT
The home office will soon be mobile – also for the person at the wheel. At least if they drive a vehicle bearing the three-pointed star: for Mercedes-Benz wants to bring about the technical realisation and safe operation of an S-Class driving in conditionally automated mode and to meet the exacting legal requirements for what is known as a Level 3 system.
It is expected that initially in Germany and from the second half of 2021, the Mercedes-Maybach will be able to drive in conditionally automated mode with the new DRIVE PILOT (optional equipment) in situations where traffic density is high or in tailbacks on suitable motorway sections. By taking pressure off the driver, this allows him/her to undertake secondary activities such as surfing the web or attending to emails in the In-Car Office. This allows a more effective use of time.
Mercedes-Benz goes a step further when it comes to parking: with the appropriate pre‑installation for the INTELLIGENT PARKING PILOT, the Maybach is ready for driverless fully automated parking (automated valet parking; Level 4).
While using the DRIVE PILOT, the driver can turn away from what is happening on the road and engage in certain secondary activities, e.g. communicating with colleagues via In-Car Office, browsing on the internet or enjoying a relaxing seat massage. This is because in DRIVE PILOT mode, functions can be enabled that are otherwise blocked when driving.
