South Africa may introduce “a total prohibition for the use and consumption of alcohol by all motor vehicle operators on South African public roads.”
In March, the cabinet approved the submission of the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill of 2019 to parliament. It said that once passed into law, the bill would contribute in reducing the carnage on the country’s roads.
In the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill, the South African government proposes a total ban of alcohol in your system while driving a car.
The bill, which was published on Monday, proposes:
“Clause 46 amends section 65 by introducing a total prohibition for the use and
consumption of alcohol by all motor vehicle operators on South African
public roads.
“It does this by deleting reference to any alcohol content in the blood or breath specimen of motor vehicle drivers on the road in South Africa.”
The bill also seeks to prohibit any amount of concentration of alcohol in a specimen of blood or specimen of breath taken from any driver, in order to enhance road traffic safety.
The National Road Traffic Act (NRA) currently enables those who have consumed alcohol to get behind the wheel provided they are under the blood alcohol limit. Currently, in SA, alcohol content prohibited is no less than 0.05g per 100ml — or in the case of a professional driver, not less than 0.02g per 100ml.
