The sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products will remain prohibited during South Africa’s lockdown at level 3. But the country has lifted the ban on the sale of alcohol.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday evening during his address to the nation on developments in our country’s risk-adjusted strategy to manage the spread of COVID-19.

Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will move to level 3 lockdown from June 1, 2020.

“This will result in the opening of the economy and the removal of a number of restrictions on the movement of people, while significantly expanding and intensifying our public health interventions,” explained Ramaphosa.

“The curfew on the movement of people will be lifted,” said Ramaphosa.

“Alcohol may be sold for home consumption only under strict conditions, on specified days and for limited hours.”

Ramaphosa added that people will also be able to leave their homes to buy goods or obtain services including medical care.

“People will also be able to exercise at any time during the day, provided this is not done in groups.”

He added that the government’s priority is to reduce the opportunities for the transmission of the virus and create a safe environment for everyone.

“We are therefore asking that those who do not need to go to work or to an educational institution continue to stay at home.”
