Soapie lovers of Mzansi will be glad to know that their favourite telenovelas may start shooting again.

Production across all major soapies, The River, Uzalo, The Queen, Imbewu, Isibaya, and Muvhango, Skeem Saam, etc, were halted to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies has published a new directive that outlines the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) regulations for film and television productions.

The regulations also outline strict mitigation measures to be followed before work can resume.

“All directions in respect of health protocols and the exposure of persons to COVID -19 must be adhered to including any additional requirements imposed by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture and the Department of Health,” reads the directive.

The following applies to content production:

  • Broadcasters may elect to resume content production based on risk assessment
  • Broadcasters must limit content production to content that can be produced with minimal risk, i.e. Telenovelas shot in a studio environment, that are easier to handle than location shoots.
  • and broadcasters must identify solutions to ensure the protection of performers and production crews.
  • Organisations at high risk of transmission should retain, to the extent possible, a work from the home approach.
  • Each broadcaster must work closely with the respective production companies and the relevant industry bodies to determine the most appropriate “return to production” strategy and feasible implementation dates.
