In a significant development, the Department of Higher Education and Training in South Africa recently inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russia’s Biotechnological University, commonly known as BioTech University. This landmark agreement paves the way for the establishment of the Centre of Open Education.

The inauguration of the Centre for Open Education took place at the premises of the Empire Partner Foundation (EPF) in Illovo, Sandton. This collaborative initiative marks the beginning of a pilot programme conducted by EPF in partnership with BioTech University, with the shared aim of advancing education in science and technology.

The official opening of the centre was a momentous event attended by prominent figures in the field. Alexander Soldatov, the Rector of Russian BioTech University, and Dr. Nkosinathi Sishi, Director General of the Department of Higher Education and Training, officiated the ceremony.

“Today paves the way for fruitful cooperation between us and gives South African students the opportunity to acquire new practical knowledge and skills, while also developing intercultural dialogue between our countries,” Soldatov said. “We have a lot to learn from one another.”

The centre for Open Education is poised to offer free training opportunities to South African citizens. Distinguished educators from BioTech University will deliver face-to-face instruction across a diverse range of invaluable courses. These courses encompass informatics and computer science, applied informatics, technological machines and equipment, mechatronics and robotics, chemical technologies, and biotechnology.

In addition to top-notch training, students participating in these programs will receive educational materials and certificates upon successful completion. This holistic approach to education emphasizes both knowledge acquisition and certification.

This collaboration exemplifies the spirit of global education and cross-cultural exchange. It stands as a testament to the transformative potential of knowledge-sharing and innovation, particularly in the fields that will define our future.

The formal launch of the Centre for Open Education represents the culmination of discussions that transpired during the 17th session of the South Africa-Russia Inter-Governmental Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation, held in March in Pretoria, South Africa. It is a significant step forward in fostering international cooperation in the realm of education and technology.

The auspicious occasion was also marked by the signing of a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), solidifying the partnership between these two influential organisations.

“We hope the signing of this MoU will open doors for more institution-to-institution cooperation. Our role as government is mainly to create a conducive environment for institutional cooperation to flourish and grow from strength to strength,” said Sishi.
