The Empire Partner Foundation today announced that Lutendo Matshidze, based in Pretoria, is the April winner of the TechFinancials News Q&A Competition.

Lutendo’s insightful and forward-thinking response explored how technology can improve safety and efficiency in the mining industry – an area where innovation has the power to save lives and reshape operations.

Her submission highlighted the potential of autonomous vehicles, drones for remote monitoring, AI-driven decision-making, and IoT logistics solutions, demonstrating a strong grasp of how smart technologies can reduce risk and improve productivity in high-risk industries like mining.

Speaking about her win, Lutendo shared: “According to research on working conditions in the mining sector, I believe that advanced technologies such as AI and the Internet of Things can be a major benefit. I really liked how the TFS competition considered my ideas and how they could potentially contribute to the future of mining. Technology is helping us find solutions to challenges we face daily.”

On how young people can drive innovation, she added: “If young people are curious and passionate about technology, they should dive deep into areas that interest them. Getting involved in competitions or hackathons that tackle real-world challenges is a great way to start. They should also be bold in sharing their ideas with industry leaders to spark meaningful change.”

Lutendo represents the spirit of Empire Partner Foundation’s mission – to empower young innovators who use technology to solve critical challenges and drive meaningful change in South Africa.

The TFS Q&A Competition is more than just a platform for youth expression – it is a tool for problem-solving across industries. Each month, the competition focuses on a challenging question drawn from a key sector, with the goal of generating innovative, implementable ideas from young minds.

Organisations that sponsor the monthly competition get the opportunity to:

  • Set the question of the month based on real challenges they face.
  • Receive fresh, relevant ideas and perspectives from youth across South Africa.
  • Support innovation and youth-driven solutions within their industry.

Empire Partner Foundation and TechFinancials News congratulate Lutendo on her achievement and thank all participants for contributing to the conversation on building safer, smarter communities through innovation.
