Waxd Solution, in partnership with Botransa, has successfully introduced a cashless payment system for minibus taxis in Swartruggens, near Rustenburg.

By leveraging its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system, Waxd has delivered a secure and efficient digital payment solution that benefits all stakeholders.

“Going cashless is a crucial step in modernising our transport system and ensuring the safety of both drivers and commuters,” explains Anthony Stewart, Group CEO of Waxd.

“Our cashless system ensures swift, secure, and seamless transactions, allowing drivers to focus on what truly matters. Phase 1 of this particular project has been running since November 2024, and we look forward to experiencing the same success rate when we launch Phase 2 in the near future.”

The transition to a digital fare system has brought numerous advantages for taxi drivers, including enhanced job security, eliminating the need to handle cash while driving, and resolving issues related to providing change.

Taxi owners have also welcomed the change, as expressed by Botransa Executive and taxi owner Tshego Mangole: “As a taxi owner, now I can sleep at night because I don’t have to worry about collecting my money.”

Implementing a cashless system in the taxi industry comes with challenges, and many companies have attempted similar projects without success.

What sets Waxd apart is its ability to adapt, incorporating industry feedback to refine its solution into a viable and sustainable implementation. This collaborative approach has ensured that the system meets the needs of all key players, including drivers, commuters, taxi owners, taxi associations, and supporting local businesses.

The taxi industry plays a vital role in South Africa’s economy, transporting millions of commuters daily. According to the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), approximately 15 million South Africans rely on minibus taxis every day. The shift to digital payments not only enhances efficiency but also contributes to the country’s broader digital transformation and financial inclusion initiatives by integrating the informal sector into the formal economy.

Key Benefits of the Cashless System:

  • Enhanced Safety – Eliminating cash transactions reduces the risk of theft, making public transport safer for both drivers and commuters. Digital payments also minimise disputes over incorrect fares or missing cash.
  • Convenience and Efficiency – Cashless payments enable instant transactions, leading to faster boarding times and shorter waiting periods. Drivers can serve more customers efficiently, increasing their revenue potential.
  • Financial Transparency and Growth – Digital transactions allow drivers and operators to track income and expenses more effectively. This financial history can also help them access credit and loans, fostering economic growth and professionalising the industry.
  • Improved Commuter Experience – Commuters no longer need to worry about carrying exact change. A simple tap-and-go system streamlines their journey while also reducing cash-handling and the spread of germs.

The South African taxi industry stands on the verge of a major transformation. Moving towards a cashless system is not just an innovation but a necessary step for a safer, more efficient, and financially sustainable future. Waxd is dedicated to driving this shift by collaborating with key industry stakeholders, including the National Department of Transport (NDOT), governing taxi bodies, local municipalities such as Rustenburg Local Municipality, and payment service providers.

“Waxd has its eyes fixed on a successful future of the taxi industry – ensuring it goes cashless. We are excited to be leading the movement towards a smarter, more efficient transportation solution for all. It truly is a case of innovation meets convenience in urban transportation,” concludes Stewart.
