This week, the Telkom Foundation hosted a technology-focused career expo at Kgola Thuto Secondary School in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, specifically aimed at empowering female learners in Grades 8 and 9.

The event sought to tackle South Africa’s widening digital skills gap by inspiring more young women to explore careers in technology.

It also offered a valuable opportunity for these students to connect with female leaders in the tech industry and discover educational resources that can support their pursuit of STEM-related careers.

“The tech world needs more women. Their perspectives, ideas, and problem-solving skills are essential to building a future that works for everyone,” said Judy Vilakazi, Head of Telkom Foundation. “By equipping young women with the skills and confidence to pursue careers in tech, we are not only opening doors for them as individuals, but also fueling innovation and driving progress for our nation as a whole.”

A highlight of the expo was the focus on TelkomLearn, an online learning platform that offers a wide range of courses, from accredited partners, from basic computer skills to advanced topics like coding and web development.

“TelkomLearn bridges geographical divides, affording South Africans boundless educational avenues for their children,” said Vilakazi. “Irrespective of location, parents and learners can leverage TelkomLearn to equip themselves with the tools they need for success in today’s digital world.”

TelkomLearn serves as the go-to platform for learners and parents seeking to empower their  child’s future with a comprehensive suite of digital-learning resources.

Whether navigating basic educational paths or exploring higher education opportunities, the platform aggregates credible digital education providers, to offer students unparalleled solutions to enrich their educational journey.

In honour of Women’s Month, the Telkom Foundation will also be donating reusable sanitary pads to all of the students attending the event. This contribution is a reflection of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the overall well-being and dignity of young women, ensuring that no student is left behind due to inadequate access to essential sanitary products.

Vilakazi said Telkom Foundation remains committed to promoting digital inclusion and empowering young people with the skills they need to succeed in the digital age.

“By investing in the education and empowerment of young women, Telkom Foundation is playing a crucial role in shaping a future where technology benefits everyone, and where young women are at the forefront of innovation and progress,” she said.
