In celebration of Mandela Day 2022, Huawei South Africa and the Department of Home Affairs partnered up to donate gift packs to newborn babies at Queen Nandi Regional Hospital in Empangeni, KwaZulu Natal. As well as handing over gift packs to the Madiba Day babies, Huawei and the department made a monetary donation to the hospital and hosted a special Mandela Day event.

The event was part of a broader Mandela Day campaign, which included an open day for civic registration and is the latest in a series of fruitful collaborations between Huawei and the department. Also benefitting from the event were learners from Exhaphozini Primary School in nearby Richards Bay, which also received a monetary donation as well as stationery, tablets, and sanitary towels.

“We are thankful to partners such as Huawei, which we have a long and rewarding relationship with, for supporting our communities and celebrating the youth, especially on the day when we give back in tribute to Nelson Mandela, the father of our nation,” said Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza. “We hope that this contribution can help to improve learning and teaching at Exhaphozini Primary School. We’re also grateful that the DHA and Huawei can provide a platform to educate the youth about digital technologies. Huawei has a strong history of investing in South Africa’s youth and their education and events like today help underline how deep their commitment is.”

“At Huawei, we strongly believe in using our position to contribute positively to society,” said Huawei South Africa Deputy CEO Kian Chen. “Throughout the year, we focus on CSI and community projects that encourage the youth to engage with technology, especially because ICT is the foundation of everything we do, including the jobs of the future.”

Also in attendance at the event were local councilors and community members.

The event additionally provided an opportunity to promote the DHA’s ongoing Smart ID programme. The campaign targets high schools nationally to provide eligible learners in Grade 12 and other eligible youth who have turned 16 with smart ID cards at no cost.
