MTN Has The Best Mobile Network In SA

MTN is ranked first among South Africa’s mobile operators with a median download speed of 51.76 Mbps, followed by Vodacom and Telkom, a report by speed test service Ookla revealed on Tuesday.

Ookla, which owns and operates the popular speedtest.net Internet speed testing service, has published its latest Speedtest Global Index rankings for South Africa for the first quarter of 2022, showing that Telkom had the lowest latency at 19 ms.

Fastest Mobile Providers

Speedtest Intelligence reveals MTN was the fastest mobile operator among top providers in South Africa in Q1 2022 with a median download speed of 51.76 Mbps.

Latency

Calculating median latency for top mobile providers in South Africa during Q1 2022, Telkom had the lowest latency at 19 ms.

Consistency Score

In measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, we found that MTN had the highest Consistency Score™ in South Africa during Q1 2022, with 88.1% of results showing at least a 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed.

5G Performance

Looking only at tests taken on a 5G connection, MTN had the fastest median download in South Africa during Q1 2022 at 213.37 Mbps. The bars shown in the chart below are 95% confidence intervals, which represent the range of values in which the true median is likely to be.

Device Information

An analysis of performance on some of the fastest phones in South Africa demonstrated the Galaxy S22 Ultra showed the fastest median download speed during Q1 2022 with 105.21 Mbps.
