Tiger Brands Venture Capital Fund has made its first investment in Herbivore Earthfoods, a Cape Town-based business specialising in the manufacture and sale of plant-based and vegan products.
Herbivore Earthfoods supplies major retailers across South Africa and sells directly to
consumers through its online platform.
The investment in Herbivore Earthfoods is closely aligned to Tiger Brands’ health and nutrition strategy.
Together with co-investor, Secha Capital, an early-stage impact private equity firm, the Tiger Brands Venture Capital Fund has become a minority shareholder in the business.
Herbivore Earthfoods is co-run by Founders, Chanel Grantham and Davey du Plessis, Operations Head.
Tiger Brands’ involvement will include strategic guidance, as well as leveraging the Group’s route-to-market capabilities and research and development expertise.
Tiger Brands has established a fund of R100 million aimed at providing access to capital for entrepreneurs either directly or indirectly linked to the food and beverages sector.
The Tiger Brands Venture Capital Fund was launched in 2021 with the aim of driving growth for Tiger Brands by investing in innovative businesses based in sub-Saharan Africa which
offer healthier eating options in line with emerging consumer trends in health and nutrition, snackification and economical food options.
It continues to assess new opportunities as well as those existing within its supplier pipeline for further potential investments.
This initiative will provide Tiger with early access to opportunities, which in turn provides a pipeline of growth initiatives to fuel future growth.
Through this venture, Tiger Brands will expand its participation in new product categories, as well as enhance its access to capabilities to continue serving its consumer base.
