TelkomONE – Telkom’s video-streaming platform, today announced the addition of a free Catch Up functionality across its SABC and other free-to-air channels on the platform – a first-of-its-kind value-added offering by a video-on-demand service locally. Catch Up is a system-driven recording of various popular programs across your favourite channels, that is then made available as a single asset, on-demand. This means you can ‘catch up’ on any gems you may have missed during the live channel playout or wish to re-watch and enjoy again.
This is the first time in South Africa that the much-loved Catch Up feature is provided at no cost to VOD (video on demand) viewers. TelkomONE users can now use their mobiles, laptops and PCs to view any SABC 1, 2, 3, SABC Sport or SABC Education shows, or specific programs from the bouquet of news and faith-based channels, in their own time, outside of its scheduled playout, because they may have missed it, it was at an inconvenient time, or just because it’s worth watching again and again.
The no-cost Catch Up feature provides continuity for the user watching TelkomONE’s free channels by enabling immediate access to any content:.
“You can’t get much better value by providing a zero-cost Catch Up service across already-free streaming channels. TelkomONE’s vision is to provide the widest selection of content, at the most affordable price, and backed by unmatched functionality. Scarcely six months after launch, we believe we’re delivering on all fronts and the viewer is the winner,” says Wanda Mkhize – Executive Smarthome and Content at Telkom.
Mkhize added that while there’s plenty to Catch Up across TelkomONE’s free TV channel and SABC offering, there is also a growing catalogue of local TV ‘box set’ shows, expected to exceed 1 200 hours in the coming weeks. Full length, top-notch series on offer free-to-air include “Shaka Zulu” and “Bedford Wives”, amongst other desirable titles across many genres. SABC is, of course, also one of the continent’s leading content producers.
Unveiled in November 2020, TelkomONE will continue to offer a range of top-notch free to air on-demand content and channels, which will be further enhanced by a growing catalogue of the programs made available as catch up.
For those looking for even more – TelkomONE has a premium selection series, short and long-form films and documentaries in the TelkomONE AMP package, with access priced from as little as R7 for AMP Daily (includes 90MB Telkom streaming data) to R49 for AMP Monthly (includes 1.8GB Telkom streaming data).
The full TelkomONE service features a content library including 1 800 hours of VOD content as well as 27 linear channels, 30 audio channels and 22 radio channels. TelkomONE is available via a browser at TelkomONE.tv or through the TelkomONE mobile app available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Plunging mobile and fixed-line data rates mean streaming services are growing in popularity in South Africa.
“Content is nothing without enabling functionality and ensuring that it’s frictionless, easy-to-access, good value functionality that mobile streaming users really appreciate. We’re pleased that free Catch Up across all free streaming channels represents a significant first from TelkomONE,” concludes Mkhize.
