Outsourced workers are planning to shutdown all Pretoria universities and colleges as well as Tshwane municipality on Monday to protest against outsourcing. By Lizeka Tandwa, NewsAgency
“We are planning to intensify our actions – aiming for total shutdown of all universities, colleges and the municipality,” #OutSourcingMustFall spokesperson Mametlwe Sebei told News24.
Sebei said they would target the University of Pretoria (UP), the Tshwane University of Technology, the Tshwane North College, the Tshwane South College and Medunsa this week.
“We want to achieve a total shutdown of all services which are using outsourced workers. We have done this at UP and Unisa and we plan on achieving this at all [the] others this week,” he said.
Last week, outsourced workers disrupted registration at Unisa and UP. The workers clashed with police at Unisa on Monday and a stun grenade was reportedly fired to disperse the crowd.
“It is sheer hypocrisy for government to pass legislation effectively outlawing the exploitative practices of labour brokering, but then continue these same practices under the guise of contracting. Universities and colleges are following government’s example,” Sebei said.
“Workers are determined to struggle until their demands are met. All they are demanding is fair pay and job security for the long hours and difficult work they do.”
Sebei urged all academics to support their cause.
He said they will be meeting with students at the universities and colleges in question to discuss unifying their protest with #FeesMustFall movement. – News24

You would never say there’s an unemployment crisis in SA when there are unemployed people going hungry, and the employed are not satisfied either! The workers accepted this employment when they had nothing, and have been working under these conditions, and were happy for years, so what has suddenly changed??

I full agree with both of you Do the right thing and Leshardt but in a workers struggle one must be very opportunistic to have their voices heard. But the timing of all of this is not good at all for our economy and where is all the money going to come from.
