Vodacom and Mukuru announced on Wednesday that they have teamed up to enable money to be sent from South Africa directly into any M-Pesa account in Lesotho within minutes. By Staff Writer
Vodacom said a user in South Africa in order to send money to Lesotho needs to register with Mukuru.
The mobile phone operator said the money transfer can be made at any major retailer such as Checkers, Lewis, Pep Stores, Pick n Pay, Shoprite and Spar.
Once payment is received, the money is instantly transferred to the recipient’s M-Pesa account in Lesotho.
Vodacom claims that this will substantially cut down on the time and cost those in the more remote areas of Lesotho previously incurred to collect funds.
“In addition to this, M-Pesa account holders can then use those funds to pay bills, to buy airtime and send money locally amongst the many services available on the M-Pesa service. Should they wish to withdraw cash, this can be done at any one of the 1, 900 plus registered M-Pesa agents across Lesotho,” said the company.
“Many individuals rely on the remittances being sent home and we are excited to be able make it easier and quicker for these individuals to send and receive money. The convenience of this product is unrivalled in the market and we see it making a real difference in lives of the Basotho people,” said Michael Cook, marketing manager at Mukuru.
