A single 1902 Veldpond, the Holy Grail of South African numismatics, was recently sold on bidorbuy for R497,000.

The coin has been graded by the world renown grading service NGC as MS 64. That made this very rare coin even scarcer. It is very seldom that these coins get such a high grade, making it, according to the seller, a superb collectors’ specimen and a once in a lifetime find.

The seller, known on the site under username Kp36, is no stranger to high value merchandise. In the space of the last thirty days, he sold an 1893 Half Pond for R106,000; an 1892 Single Shaft Pond for R31,500; and an 1892 Double Shaft Pond for R18,500.

All in all, the user Kp36 has sold almost one thousand items on bidorbuy and has managed to maintain a stellar rating of 100%.

Rare and collectible coins are one of the most popular sections of South African marketplace bidorbuy.co.za and every so often a very rare variety achieves an extraordinarily high price. In June 2010, another 1902 Veldpond was sold for top rand, that time with a price tag of R450,000.

Right now, a 1931 proof set of the Union of South Africa that includes the rare Tickey coin is attracting a lot of attention on the site. Twelve bidders have pushed the price from the opening R200,000 to the current R252,000. The seller, whose bidorbuy user name is Pierre_Henri, expects that the highest bid will be in the region of R400,000 by the time the auction is set to close on 30 April.

Pierre_Henri, who has sold over 11,000 items on bidorbuy, is also maintaining a stellar 100% positive ratings score.
