Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane is under intense scrutiny amid suspicions that her Sector Education and Training Authorities (Seta) “panel” may be imaginary, plunging her deeper into controversy.

According to a Sunday Times report, Nkabane—once hailed as one of the ANC’s rising stars—now faces a political firestorm over her aborted plan to appoint politically connected chairs to Setas.

ANC Cronyism Allegations

The scandal erupted when it was revealed that Nkabane’s proposed list was packed with ANC loyalists, including the son of Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy.

The move sparked outrage, raising concerns about nepotism and lack of transparency in key government appointments.

Defiant Stance in Parliament

During a heated Parliamentary Portfolio Committee meeting on May 30, Nkabane refused to disclose the names of the panellists, dismissing questions with a suggestion that committee chair Tebogo Letsie should “consult Google.”

Her dismissive attitude drew sharp criticism, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to summon her for an explanation.

Ramaphosa’s Intervention

Sources reveal that Ramaphosa reprimanded Nkabane and ordered her to submit a detailed report on the panel’s selection process, its members, and their recommendations. A high-level government insider told the Sunday Times:

“She would have to come out straight and say there was no panel, because she can’t say to the president, ‘I can’t tell you.’”

The source added:

“Transparency is a constitutional principle… If the minister cannot admit wrongdoing, it suggests motives that are not clean.”

Nkabane’s Half-Headed Apology

Following the backlash, Nkabane issued a statement acknowledging her conduct was “unacceptable” and vowed to improve relations with Parliament. However, doubts remain over whether she can salvage her credibility amid growing calls for accountability.

Conclusion

With pressure mounting and Ramaphosa’s office demanding answers, Nkabane’s political future hangs in the balance. If no panel existed, the scandal could mark a career-ending misstep for the embattled minister.
