Today is the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD).
The ITU, a United Nations telecoms arm, has adopted “Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All” as this year’s theme.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is taking centre stage with a lot of impact on people’s lives.
In recent years there has been significant progress in AI technology.
AI-based technologies are now emerging as a key component of tools and applications being used to help people lead better lives by improving healthcare, education, finance, agriculture, transportation, and a wide range of other services.
ITU, in its role of Specialized UN Agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs services and technologies, wishes to work with Academia, researchers, industries, Administrations and Governments, UN Agencies, as well as other stakeholders and partners, to facilitate the AI development, to bring the benefits of AI to all.
The WTISD is an official United Nations day of observance. It is held annually on 17 May to promote the potential of the Internet and other ICTs to improve societies and economies worldwide.
“As the UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies, ITU is well placed to guide AI innovation towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” says – Houlin Zhao, Secretary General of ITU.
“We are providing a neutral platform for international dialogue aimed at building a common understanding of the capabilities of emerging AI technologies.”
