DD Mabuza, the deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) is to be sworn in as a member of parliament (MP), according to the state broadcaster.

The SABC reported late on Monday that Mabuza will be sworn in as MP tomorrow.

If this is true, it will be a clear indication that Mabuza will occupy the position of Deputy President of South Africa, a position vacated by current President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa took over from Jacob Zuma after he resigned as president on February 14.

However, News24 reported earlier that Mabuza would prefer to finish his term as premier, but is being pushed by the Mpumalanga African National Congress to enter the national stage. Some want him to leave the province so that they can “start afresh”.

The names of ministers Naledi Pandor and Lindiwe Sisulu, as well as the speaker Baleka Mbete, have been touted as possible candidates. Another wild card name that has been mentioned is that of Paul Mashatile, the Gauteng ANC leader and treasurer-general of the ANC.

The SABC also said former ANC Treasure General Zweli Mkhize will be sworn in as an MP.

Mkhize has been rumoured as a successor to Malusi Gigaba as Minister of Finance.
