This January, South Africans primarily used YouTube for watching music videos. In fact, of the top 10 videos watched during the month, six were music videos. Of those, two were by South African performers, with the remaining four coming from international artists.
When the country’s YouTube users weren’t watching music videos, they were taking an interest in politics. Among the topics that concerned them on that front were the possibility of Oprah Winfrey running for US president, following her being given the Cecil B. de Mille Award at the 2018 Golden Globes, and Donald Trump’s latest missive insulting African countries.
On the local front, the only non-music video to feature was former finance minister Pravin Gordhan grilling former Eskom chief financial officer Anoj Singh in parliament. Singh is part of an inquiry into Eskom examining evidence that he and other managers at the power utility aided the controversial Gupta family in looting it.
