As South Africa heads into the festive season, YouTube has released its annual Rewind – looking back at the most-watched videos for the year in South Africa and globally.

This year South Africans were after a little bit of distraction – the top 5 most watched videos (excluding major music labels) were all entertainment videos. Topping the list was local artist Bhizer with 2017’s smash hit Gobisiqolo.

The top trending videos for 2017 are based on views, shares, comments, likes and more. YouTube Rewind brings together the biggest music, trends, memes, and characters from 2017 featuring today’s biggest YouTube stars and mainstream personalities.

From international phenomenons and educational videos to thrilling moments from traditional media and big names, this year’s list of top trending videos represents the amazing variety of creativity brought to YouTube each day.

Since 2012, YouTube Rewind has been viewed over 750m times (202m views from 2016, 128m views from 2015, 120m views from 2014, 123m views from 2013 and 185m views from 2012).

YouTube Rewind 2017 features 290 YouTube Creators, representing nearly 20 countries as well as viral stars, top musicians, and celebrities.
