JSE-listed telecommunication firm Huge Group announced on Tuesday the appointment of Gunter Engling as managing director of its main operating company Huge Telecom.

His appointment will be effective on 1 April 2018 after he has served his notice period with MTN.

Gunter has 14 years of experience in the telecommunications industry, primarily with the MTN, Africa and the Middle East’s biggest mobile phone operator.

During his time at MTN, Gunter has held a number of senior positions both in South Africa and across the African continent

Gunter joined MTN’s finance department in 2003 and held various senior positions throughout the organisation.

In October 2016, he was appointed as acting group CFO responsible for Group wide finance activities and in April 2017 he was appointed as deputy group chief financial officer, where he held primary responsibility for MTN Group’s core finance function.

During his 14 years with the MTN, Gunter held the position of acting group CFO, CEO: Rwanda, CFO: Ghana and the General Manager: Financial Planning: Nigeria, the MTN Group’s largest operation.

While in the role of CEO: Rwanda, Gunter was responsible for the performance of the operations in that country, including overseeing the strategic direction in conjunction with relevant group functions.

Gunter also led many significant commercial and finance initiatives at the MTN Group, including acting as the project lead on a tower sale for MTN Ghana while CFO in Ghana.

Huge said Gunter has some unique attributes, including operational, financial and African experience in the telecommunications arena.

“These skills will stand him in good stead to grow and drive the development of Huge Telecom,” the company informed investors on Tuesday.

Huge Group operations centre mainly on its subsidiaries Huge Telecom, which has thousands customers with telephone lines, and Huge Mobile.  They both provide services such as voice, messaging and data connectivity using a wireless GSM-based, fixed-cellular, last-mile solution to corporate and residential clients.
